Guatemala Before the Conquest The Maya Civilization peaked around 800 and fell into decline shortly thereafter. It was a collection of powerful city-states who warred and traded with one another, and it stretched from Southern Mexico to Belize and Honduras. The Maya were builders, astronomers, and philosophers with a rich culture. By the time the Spanish arrived, however, the Maya had degenerated into a number of small fortified kingdoms, the strongest of which were the K’iche and Kaqchikel in Central Guatemala. The Conquest of the Maya The conquest of the Maya was led by Pedro de Alvarado, one of the top lieutenants of Hernn Cortà ©s, and a veteran of the conquest of Mexico. Alvarado led fewer than 500 Spanish and a number of native Mexican allies into the region. He made an ally of the Kaqchikel and warred upon the K’iche, whom he defeated in 1524. His abuses of the Kaqchikel caused them to turn on him, and he spent until 1527 stamping out various rebellions. With the two strongest kingdoms out of the way, the other, smaller ones were isolated and destroyed as well. The Verapaz Experiment One region still held out: the cloudy, misty, north-central highlands of modern-day Guatemala. All Quiet on the Western Front by E.M. Remarque

â€Å"This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession†¦ It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war† states Erich Maria Remarque in the very beginning of his most known novel All Quiet on the Western Front. This book blames the war on damaging young people and states how they will never adapt back to normal life and accuses people who don't even fight in the war of starting it for no reason. The narrator of the story, Paul, talks about his experience with the war turning these sane men into heaps of madness, and how the war was completely unnecessary and does not do the country any good. Paul says while on leave, â€Å"Out there I was indifferent and often hopeless– I will never be able to be so again. I was a soldier, and now I am nothing but an agony for myself, my mother, for everything that is so comfortless and without end†.(p. 185) This evidence shows that the war causes the soldiers to feel uncomfortable with the world outside after the war. The war changes the soldiers into people who teach others to kill and don't even know the reason. For example, one night while Paul volunteered for patrol, shelling started so he got into a shell hole to take cover. A Frenchman later jumps into the hole with Paul but Paul has to stab him. While in the hole with the Frenchman's lifeless body Paul talks to him he says, â€Å"Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony–Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?†(p.223) this shows that even the soldiers don't like the fact that they fight these people for no reason, that they all have rights as people and they all show fear so why would they fight each other. While on leave Paul speaks to two gentlemen who offer him cigars, while talking to the gentlemen one says, â€Å"but this relates to the whole. And of that, you are not able to judge. You see only your little sector and so cannot have any general survey. You do your duty, you risk your lives, that deserves the highest honor–every man.†, this shows that people who don't even fight in the war think that they know more about what goes on than the soldiers who actually fight in the battle. Another way the book shows that the soldiers don't want the war and that it only helps a select few takes place on page 206. One quote on this page reads † every full-grown emperor requires at least one war otherwise he would not be famous†¦ there are other people back behind there who profit from the war, that's for certain.† this blames the government for needing a war because they believe it would make them go down in history as a great nation and that the war's only purpose consisted of a government wanting too much power. â€Å"I think it is more of a kind of fever no one, in particular, wants it, and then all at once there, it is. We didn't want the war, the others say the same thing– and yet half the world's in it all the same.†(p.206) this quote comes up when Paul and his comrades talked about the significance of the war and why they fought the war. It states that the people never wanted or needed the war in the first place the government wanted to show that they had power. Remarque accuses the government with this statement because he writes about the people and the soldiers not wanting the war for many reasons such as food, materials, and money, but yet the war still took place. All in all this book accuses the war and the government of the death of these young men and for ruining their lives. The war did not need to take place and many people did not like the war. The war caused young men to get drafted and not have proper training on the battlefield causing more casualties. All of these things make All Quiet on the Western Front what remarque said it wouldn't turn into, an accusation.

My upbringing was of a military family with my Father being from central Indiana and my mother coming from Japan, this difference has interestingly shaped my views a little bit differently from hers, but on the same side of things as we have become older shaped a truly similar point of view on ourselves, family, and society. Taking the Myers Briggs test I scored a type SITS and was named a Trustee, meaning that I was more Introverted, sensing, thinking, and Judging than my mate although similar with a type JIFFS and names conservator tying between introverted and extroverted, ensign, feeling, and judging being her higher marked percentages.What I found out is that for me it was pretty accurate I feel as I am more introverted when it comes to accomplishments and things that I can do to make things matter most. Am a thinker and think most before doing something whether It has to do with myself of others, and overtime have become Judging in my perception of Issues or Ideas.My Interviewe e tested similar with the exception of being more feeling, I for one can see this as she is always looking out for the less fortunate, and helping when she can no tater what, spreading her schedule thinner as the days of the week unfold. Critical Analysis of Peter Singer’s Famine Affluence and Morality Essay

In his article â€Å"Famine, Affluence and Morality† Peter Singer gives a seemingly devastating critique of our ordinary ways of thinking about famine relief, charity, and morality in general. In spite of that very few people have accepted, or at any rate acted on, the conclusions he reaches. In light of these facts one might say of Singer’s arguments, as Hume said of Berkeley’s arguments for immaterialism, that â€Å"†¦ they admit of no answer and produce no conviction.†[1] While I do think that Singer’s considerations show that people should do considerably more than most people actually do, they do not establish his conclusions in their full strength or generality. So his arguments admit of a partial answer, and once properly qualified may produce some conviction. In â€Å"Famine. Affluence, and Morality,† Peter Singer stresses the possible revisionary implications of accepting utilitarianism as a guide to conduct. He does not actuall y espouse utilitarianism in this essay, rather a cousin of utilitarianism. He observes, in the world today, there are many people suffering a lot, leading miserable lives, on the margin, prone to calamity whenever natural disasters or wars or other cataclysmic events strike. Many millions of people live on an income equivalent to one dollar a day or less. What, if anything, does morality say one should do about this? Singer proposes two principles—a stronger one he favors, a weaker one he offers as a fallback. The Strong Singer Principle: â€Å"If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it.† The Weak Singer Principle: â€Å"If it is in our power to prevent something very bad from happening, without sacrificing anything morally significant, we ought, morally, to do it.† Consider the Strong Singer Principle. He explains that â€Å"by without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance† I mean without causing anything else comparably bad to happen, or doing something that is wrong in itself, or failing to promote some moral good, comparable in significance to the bad thing that we can prevent.† From the first principle it follows that whether one should help those who are suffering or dying doesn’t depend on how close one is to them, unles s that makes helping them more difficult, because their distance from one does nothing to lessen their suffering. From both principles together, it follows that one’s obligation to help those who are suffering or dying doesn’t go away if other people who are also in a position to help them aren’t doing anything, because the presence of other people who do nothing is, in moral terms, no different from the absence of people who do something. Singer comments on this argument by adding that he could get by with a weaker version of the second principle, which would have â€Å"something of moral significance† in place of â€Å"something of roughly equal moral importance† (506). He also gives a hypothetical example of the second principle in action: If one is in a position to save a child drowning in a pond, one should rescue the child even though that means dirtying one’s clothes, because that is not a morally significant cost and the child’s death would be an extremely morally bad state of affairs (506).

German cars stand out among other brands and they are made to perfection to give the owners the feeling of luxury. Their most famous brands include BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and Volkswagen. Even though their cars are expensive, people are committed to buy for prestige and the excellent quality. Germans are considered to be very serious and industrious. They are punctual and highly organized. Their business deals are rarely cancelled due to poor mistakes and failure to meet the required standards. They are also good technicians, a trait that is said to make certain Germans arrogant. These are stereotypes which work to the advantage of the Germans. They can easily access more customers because the cars produced are expected to be of high quality and they are bound to be punctual in delivering the cars once they are finished. Some say they are too academic, they have no sense of humor and are likely to give more business talk than social talk. However, they are helpful and are very dependable. To a certain extent, this could be good for business. Many businessmen are more likely to engage themselves in serious deals rather than keep cracking jokes and wasting time. This way, their car business can do quite well. Their days are always packed but when they do get a break they engage in a lot of eating junk food, meat and beer drinking which is why they are usually overweight. The Germans make use of other people to do the dirty work for them while they take the lighter duties of polishing the cars and finalizing the sale deals. These are negative stereotypes that can work against the German car business since stereotypical people are likely to discriminate against them for other cars from other companies. Since the majority of autoworkers they employ are low income earners, questions are raised as to why they do not pay them enough yet they get so much. Strategies to reduce negative effects Most of the negative stereotypes against Germans seem to be inclined towards their physical attributes. People tend to associate people who eat and drink much with poor performance. This is more so if they are overweight. However, this problem can be overcome by proving that one is as effective as the others. It does not mean that they are lazy and therefore they should work hard in order to show that their physical attributes do not affect their work. The Germans working in the car industry can also try to be more sensitive to their employees and pay them better wages. This way they can be satisfied with their work and promote the achievement of better results. Strategies to retain positive effects So as to retain the positive effects and continue promoting their cars, Germans should continue aiming for higher education and acquire more technical skills and knowledge to improve the quality of their work. Their aim should be to produce even better cars that will appeal to the customers. Their industrious nature should not be changed and there is need for their punctuality to be maintained. Germans have the advantage of being friendly and helpful, a trait that they can use to promote business since customers are more pleased when they are treated with care. In doing this, they should try to adopt a less serious look so as to effectively communicate with customers and close deals much easily.
